Join the fun hands-on!
Operating Sessions are a hands-on opportunity to experience the team sport of operating a model railroad like a full size railroad. They provide a planned purpose to switching and forwarding cars to identified destinations and industries.
Operating sessions generally run for 3 to 4 hours. You are expected to stay for the entire session.
Operating sessions are limited to convention registrants who sign up on this page. They are NOT open houses like normal layout tours where visitors may come and go at their convenience.
Every model railroad operating session has a maximum capacity for the number of operators based on the practical amount of switching and train operations it is designed to support. Extra people clog the aisles and add to the general noise level in a room, making it less fun for those involved in the operation to perform and enjoy it.
Most operating layouts also may have a minimum number of people needed to have a balance to the flow of cars and trains. If the minimum for a layout is not met, the session may be cancelled. The owner may choose to offer a layout tour instead during the time slot. Check back here for the status of any op session you may have interest in.
